    Left 4 Dead 2

Post by chronorec on Tue Oct 12, 2010 10:48 am

Let's talk about our club's most popular game now!

I've listed some general pointers on the game, so feel free to share yours or ask any questions!
These are more applicable to versus mode. Work is still in progress.

    General Info + Tips
    Survivors
    Basics
Objective: Get to the safe room at the end of the map as a team.

Each survivor start with 100 health. As damage is taken, health will decrease and change color to yellow and red depending on amount remaining. Movement and actions will be slower when health is yellow or red. When health reaches zero, you'll go down and require a teammate to save you. When you're saved, you'll gain 30 temporary health which can be seen by a health bar which is not solid colored. This health will slowly decrease over time. You can go down a total of 3 times before you reach black & white, thereafter you'll be dead the next time you go down.

There're a total of 5 Weapons slots, each slot can only hold one item:
    1.Primary weapon
    2.Secondary Weapon - Pistol/ melee
    3.Throwables - Molotov/ Pipe bomb/ Bile jar
    4.First aid kit/ Defibrillator/ Upgrade Ammo packs
    5.Pain pills/ Adrenaline

    Do:
1.Stick together, look out for each other. Try to work in pairs, 1st and 2nd guy look out for each other, 3rd and 4th guy same thing.
    2. Prioritize teammates who are currently under attack by the special infected over those who are down. I can already recall a few incidents where I was being saved while there was someone behind getting jockeyed/ charged.
    3. Move fast, don't linger around for extended periods of time, this gives more opportunities for the infected to coordinate their attacks on you.
    4. Cover spawn points. The special infected cannot spawn in any place where you can see them, hence use this to your advantage. Eg. Don't get everyone to hide in some lonely corner in a room as the infected can just spawn outside the door and attack you from your blind spot. Instead, have one person be at the door.

    Don't:
    1.Fire at your teammate
2.Wander off alone without notifying your team

    Weapons
    Submachine guns(SMGs)
One of the weapons that will appear on the first map of each campaign, SMG is a general use weapon with decent accuracy and rate of fire, however it loses out on firepower when compared to other weapons. Choose this if you do not know how to use a shotgun. Change to a rifle asap if possible.

    Shotguns
Shotguns can be distinguished by their long barrels. Unlike other weapons, each shotgun round contains a number of pellets, usually around 8-10. Hence you can treat it as if it fires 8-10 bullets around the area you are firing. However, the spread of the pellets vary among different shotguns. This makes it a powerful weapon for taking out multiple common infected with a shot. It is also the only weapon you can use to reliably kill a witch in one hit.
Due to the spread, it is a poor weapon for long range, it is advisable to carry pistols as secondary weapons. Person holding it should be leading the team so as to prevent friendly fire.

    Rifles
Also a general use weapon, it is one tier above the SMGs. M-16 Assault rifle(Black) is the most user-friendly out of the 3 rifles, always choose this weapon if you're not sure what to use. While Ak-47 provides the most firepower(Brown) at the expense of accuracy. Laser sight eliminated the lack of accuracy on the Ak-47 though.

    Sniper Rifles
    Required: Good aim
Sniper Rifles are the guns that come with a scope on top, press your middle mouse button to use the scope. As what one would think, these are best used for long range attack and are the most accurate weapons in game. The unique thing about them is that their bullet will pass through any number of infected in a straight line. When not in realism mode, any common infected will die in a hit regardless of where they're hit. However, they work poorly when you're getting surrounded by common infected so it is advisable to carry a melee weapon in your secondary slot.

    Pistols
As stated above, it is recommended for people using the shotgun. Note that survivor using a melee weapon will miraculously pull a pistol out of nowhere when they're down as well.
The default pistol can be dual wielded. However, generally firepower is weak and it'll take more than a couple of shots just to kill a charger.
Magnum is the most holy gun of all, it can kill any common infected in one hit, the importance can be seen when playing on higher difficulty levels and realism. It offers much better accuracy than the normal pistols when downed as well.

    Infected
    Basics
1.The role of the infected is to stop the survivors from reaching the safe room. Always try to work as a team as the benefits reaped will be exponential.

2.The element of surprise is crucial in an infected attack, thus do not spawn too early as this will alert the survivors of your presence!

3.If your attack fail and you need to wait for your skill to recharge, try to run far away from the survivors and respawn by pressing E. It is difficult to attack more than once when they know you are there already.

4.When playing as Charger or Boomer, do not spawn behind the survivors and attempt to catch up to them. There is no point doing this as you waste precious time running and they probably know you're behind anyway and kill you in a few seconds.

5.Do not delay spawning. On average from the time you die to the time you respawn is about 25 seconds. If you can spend 25 seconds not doing anything, you just wasted a turn.

6.You can not spawn in any place where any straight line from the survivor can come in contact with you. Sometimes when you're behind a big vehicle, the only part they can see is your feet. To circumvent this, jump and then spawn.

    Boomer
Pukes on survivors and calls a horde which attack puked survivors.
Slow and bulky he/she may be, but the boomer is the most important infected of all. Attack from corners and rooftops on areas where the survivors have to pass through and drown them in your puke. If you are still alive after attacking, run forward and melee the remaining survivors who aren't puked on yet. However, if you are able to run away, you can consider retreating and respawn.
Boomer puke has infinite vertical range so you can be on top of a high building and still be able to get your puke on the survivor, though you need to aim a little higher as it travels like a projectile.

    Hunter
Press crouch(default key ctrl) before you can pounce.
While the hunter may seem to be nothing much at first sight, it is actually a damage powerhouse when you master it.
It is probably the most difficult infected to master that there is even a hunter training map created for it. When mastered however the rewards will definitely be worth it.
The hunter's attack consists of the pounce damage and the scratch damage. The pounce damage is calculated based on the displacement from the spot you leap to the target, it is capped at a maximum of 25. The pounce damage should be made use of as much as possible, and the survivors will quickly fall like flies.

The hunter does not make any noise when not crouching, thus spawning early is not a problem. Sometimes, simply circling around the survivor and using your melee attack is effective too.

    Charger
Charges, grabs the 1st survivor and continue charging until it slams into an obstacle.
Do not spawn too far from the survivors as it is relatively easy to kite a charge. Spawn and attack only when they're within steps of you.
It is possible to death charge the survivors off a ledge in certain maps, notably in Dead Centre: Hotel, Hard Rain at the mill and Parish on the bridge. There is no way for them to revive once they're death charged so save your charger for these opportunities!

    Smoker
Ranged attack which pulls survivor to self and then claws them.
There are many areas where you can pull the survivor off a ledge and make them travel a distance back to the same point. Also, there're some points whereby once the survivors pass it, it'll be impossible or difficult to turn back. Always try to attack the last man at these points so that their teammates will have a hard time saving them.

    Jockey
Jumps on survivor and steer them in the direction you want.
After riding a survivor, steer them in the direction of the starting point so that the teammates in front will have to backtrack.

    Spitter
Fires a spit which deals damage over time in an area. Note that the spit travels like a projectile which spreads out upon impact and obeys the laws of gravitation. Aim at the ceiling and it will travel straight down when it hits, this way it is possible to attack from their totally blind spot. Survivors will often try to jump on tables or boxes when they notice a spit, so try to aim at the tallest box or table, the spit will still spread out onto the ground and they will spend a few more seconds trying to get out of it.

The answer to survivors huddling together, simply just spit on them.
Try to coordinate your spit with your teammates attacks. Spit on the charger, hunter or smoker which just attacked a survivor for extra damage. However note that there is a 2 seconds timeframe whereby the survivor won't take any damage after an attack.
Spit can also be used as a deterrence. Just after the 1st man or just before the last man walks through a doorway, spit at the doorway so that he is separated from his teammates. Have your teammate ready to attack the lone guy and his teammates will have to choose between crossing the spit or letting him be attacked.

    Tank
    Left click: Punch
Right click: Throws a rock at target
Despite being big and intimidating, it is possible to run around as a tank and die without dealing damage.
Make sure your teammates are ready to spawn and support you before you go head out for an attack. Avoid fighting in the open as you're likely to just take damage from all directions. Rock throwing is useful when you're on top of a building or behind a low wall. As rocks travels like a projectile, it is possible to hit the survivors from somewhere where they can't attack you.

Aim for the survivors with the lowest health (red followed by yellow). After you down a survivor, go for the next one, do not waste time hitting the downed survivor. However, take note of other survivors who try to save him and attack them when possible.
If there're any punchable objects such as cars or bins nearby, try to use them as much as possible. Using them to hit survivors will down them instantly.

    Witch
No, you can't play as the witch but you should always try to make use of her when she's around. As a smoker or jockey, try to attack and get a survivor near the witch so that if the other teammates return fire, the witch will be startled and hopefully down one of them.

Tell that to a certain AniW chair...

    Tank
I'd say, the worse one can be as a tank is to get lost in the area you spawn from =.= Other than that, the best way to train a tank is by playing Taaannnk! *shamelessly promoting this mutation XDD* About how to fight a tank, I dunno. Using melee (chainsaw, katana, maybe machete or axe) is pretty useful and you can get Tank Burger achievement XD

    Witch
I watched a friend tackle a witch in 10 seconds flat. Just aim from far and shoot. Of course, accuracy is important, something which I'm still mada mada dane.

    Gimme a melee anytime.

On normal difficulty, witches can be easily taken care of by rifles but that's not the proper way to kill one. Witches are meant to be cr0wned with a shotgun, they die in 1 second flat. Aim at her forehead somewhere on her eye level and blast off.

The proper way to play a survivor is to wait for the right time, then shoot your teammates. This is especially effective if you are right outside the safe house.

*facepalm* Stif I think you'll enjoy this mutation. Can't remember the title, but it's definitely betrayal at its best - it's where survivors help each other through the campaign, but only one will survive in the end.

@Chronorec - I agree. If we're playing realism one day it's the only way to kill the witch before she kills you, haha.
